Foot Drop May Increase Your Risk of Falling

If you or someone you love is having difficulty walking up stairs, struggles with balance, or is prone to tripping or falling, they may have a condition known as foot drop. This condition makes it difficult for a person to lift the front part of the foot, and may also cause numbness, weakness, and limpness in the foot. Foot drop may also trigger a change in how a person walks, in order to counteract these impediments. Foot drop most typically occurs when the peroneal nerve (which controls the muscles that lift the foot) becomes damaged due to compression, injury, or disease. It may also be due to a muscular or anatomical issue. This condition may be temporary or permanent, with possible treatments including orthosis, orthotics, physical therapy, nerve stimulation, or even surgery if necessary. Because the symptoms of foot drop can raise a person’s risk of falling and/or tripping, a podiatrist should be consulted as soon as possible to explore all treatment options.

  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. What Is an Achilles Tendon Rupture?

The Achilles tendon is a band of fibrous tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. Though this tendon is tough, it can tear or rupture during physical activity. A ruptured Achilles tendon can cause many symptoms, including a sharp, sudden pain at the back of the ankle, difficulty walking, weakness, and an inability to raise the injured foot. Some people are able to walk or continue playing sports with a ruptured Achilles tendon due to the surrounding muscles compensating. However, this can make the injury worse. A rupture can be treated conservatively or with surgery. Conservative treatment typically involves immobilizing the injured leg with a cast to allow it to heal. Surgery repairs the ruptured tendon. If you believe that you may have ruptured your Achilles tendon, it is strongly suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist.

Lack of Flexibility in the Big Toe

If it becomes more and more difficult to flex your big toe, you may have a condition known as hallux limitus. This condition affects the joint between the big toe and the foot, making the area inflexible and causing pain when you walk. As the condition progresses, it can lead to arthritis and bone spurs. Symptoms include a bony lump on the top of the big toe, numbness or tingling if the bone spurs press on a nerve, and a callus building up under the joint. These conditions may also affect your gait, as you try to compensate for the pain, and further affect the knee, hip or low back. Hallux limitus can be caused by injury, arthritis, overuse and genetics. Home treatment options include wearing low-heeled shoes that fit properly and have a thick or rigid sole; wearing gel pads or other orthotics in your shoes; and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. But if your big toe pain continues, or worsens, it is a good idea to seek the professional opinion and diagnosis of a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Plantar Fasciitis Prevention

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common foot injuries and the most frequent cause of heel pain. This condition occurs when the plantar fascia, a ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed usually due to repetitive stress and overuse. When the plantar fascia is injured, you may feel a sharp, stabbing pain in your heel and have pain in the arch of the foot. The pain is often at its worst when you take your first few steps in the morning or after a long rest. Fortunately, plantar fasciitis is both treatable and preventable. To prevent plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you wear comfortable, well-fitted, supportive shoes, rest your feet after a workout or after standing for an extended amount of time, and stretch your feet regularly. What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet

  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
