Corns and Shoes

The development of corns on the feet can be an annoyance for a wide variety of individuals across the country. Typically this condition develops in response to the concentration of intense pressure or friction on the foot. The corn itself is made of thick skin. Importantly, there are steps that you might consider taking in caring for your corns. For example, wearing the correct kind of footwear can have a significant impact on the extent to which the corns are being taken care of. By wearing shoes that are ill-fitting, an individual can aggravate the corns. Instead, one might think about wearing shoes that provide the feet with sufficient space to move about in freely. Thus, by choosing to wear the right kind of shoes, a person can sufficiently guard against both the formation and aggravation of corns. If you think that you might have corns, contact a podiatrist today to learn more about what can be done to mitigate and treat the condition.

Handball and Foot Injuries

Handball has evolved into a sport with increased speed, intensity, and force, which leads to more injuries. The most common foot injuries resulting from playing handball include sprained ankles and heel pain. When jumping and landing wrong on the foot while playing handball, one can easily get a sprained ankle. The foot can fold inward, which can lead to a rupture or tear of the ligament on the outside of the foot. Among other things, this can happen if a previous ankle sprain has not adequately healed, there is reduced coordination and balance in the ankle, or one is training on uneven surfaces. If one has sprained their ankle, they are likely to feel pain and experience swelling, especially on the outside of the ankle, and have reduced mobility. Similarly, heel pain can occur from overstraining the heel area. This can happen if there is insufficient rest and recovery after playing handball or one is over-exerting themselves, particularly for their age. One might feel pain during and after playing handball when pressure is put on the heel after a period of rest, and sensitivity is around the heel bone. If you play handball and experience foot or ankle pain, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist who can diagnose the problem and provide treatment options.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact Dr. Thomas Madden of Advanced Foot Care Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

The Many Benefits of Foot Massages

Foot massages are performed worldwide, and have been practiced for hundreds of years. They have been proven to be beneficial to different parts of the body, starting with the feet. There are specific pressure points in the feet that are connected to different organs in the body, and may be effective in releasing energetic blockages. Having a foot massage may help to reduce stress, possibly alleviate pain, and accelerate recovery from an injury. Additional benefits can include improved circulation and a reduction in the stress hormone known as cortisol. Many patients enjoy an enhanced sense of well-being and balance after having a foot massage performed, and they may sleep more fitfully. Physically, the joints in the feet may be loosened by rotating and twisting the toes and the feet. Many people enjoy the firmness of having their feet rubbed, and a scented lotion is often applied during the massage process. If you would like to learn about the additional benefits of foot massages, please consult with a podiatrist.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, consult with Dr. Thomas Madden from Advanced Foot Care Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

An important benefit of frequently stretching the toes is to improve flexibility and range of motion. Strength is generally also improved, and this may contribute to reducing the risk of getting a bunion or plantar fasciitis. Many people enjoy practicing toe lifts. This is done by lifting the toes to the same height while standing, followed by holding this position for several seconds, and then repeating. An effective foot stretch is called the toe lift and spread, and is done while sitting with the feet on the floor. This is a similar stretch as the toe lift, and may be performed by using a resistance band around the toes, which can make it more challenging. Additionally, the big toe can be pulled by wrapping a towel around it while pulling the toe close to you. This can help to improve mobility in this toe, and the entire foot may benefit from it. If you would like additional information about the importance of stretching the toes, and how to accomplish this, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you in the right direction.

Why Stretching Is Important for Your Feet

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Dr. Thomas Madden from Advanced Foot Care Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous exercise, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

Possible Benefits of Walking Barefoot

There are several benefits that can occur when parents encourage their children to walk barefoot. These can include improvements in balance, walking, and range of motion. Additionally, the joints and muscles in the feet can become stronger, as a result of the toes gripping the floor. Research has indicated that the nervous system is stimulated when a child walks barefoot, and pressure points are used to send messages to various parts of the body. Children often become more aware of their surroundings when they walk barefoot outside. Walking on different surfaces such as grass, sand, leaves, and concrete can help the child to become more sensitive to nature. Their motor skills may be improved, and it may be easier to jump and balance during playtime activities. It is advised that sunscreen is applied to the child’s feet, and as a precaution against getting a sunburn, shoes may need to be worn outside on a particularly sunny day. If you would like more information about the benefits of having your child walk barefoot, please ask a podiatrist who can help you with the information you are seeking.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
