Children and young teenagers who have heel pain may have a foot condition that is known as Sever’s disease. It can affect people in this age group who frequently participate in running and jumping activities. It can happen as a result of bones that grow faster than the muscles and tendons in the heel, and this can cause the calf muscles to tighten. Common symptoms that are often experienced with Sever’s disease include swelling, tenderness when the heel is touched, and the patient may walk on their toes due to the pain. Relief and treatment can begin with stopping the activity that caused the condition, followed by performing specific stretches that may ease the pain. A calf stretch is generally successful in improving flexibility in the feet and calves. This is done by standing on a step and lowering the heels one at a time until a gentle stretch is felt. The pain typically stops when the growth spurt has been completed, and may return if another growth spurt takes place. Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Where is the Cuboid Bone?

One of the stabilizer bones in the foot is referred to as the cuboid bone. It is shaped like a cube, and is located on the outside of the foot. It acts like a pulley, and is instrumental in helping the foot point downward. Cuboid syndrome is the partial dislocation of the cuboid bone where it connects to the heel. It can result from an ankle sprain, or from excessively rolling the foot inward, which can happen from participating in certain sporting activities. Common symptoms experienced with this ailment include pain on the outside of the foot, limited range of motion, and swelling. Treatment generally begins with elevating the affected foot, followed by wearing a supportive walking boot. Strengthening exercises may be performed that can benefit the entire foot, and leisure activities can gradually return to normal. Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Plantar Fasciitis in Dancers

Although almost anyone can develop plantar fasciitis, some individuals are at a greater risk of exhibiting this foot ailment. One such higher risk group includes dancers. Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition that causes heel pain. It is caused by the inflammation of the plantar fascia that runs from the toes to the heel. Those suffering from plantar fasciitis typically experience sharp pain in the heel, tight Achilles tendons, and pronounced pain when beginning to walk after extended periods of rest. Dancers can be at a higher risk of experiencing plantar fasciitis because they engage in large amounts of physical activity wearing high heels and often exert themselves without taking adequate breaks. What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
